The bustling port city of Castries is St. Lucia's capital. Shoppers flock to the city's dozens of stores and to Castries Market for fruits, vegetables and handicrafts. Sightseers admire murals painted by a local artist inside Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and relax in Derek Walcott Square, named for the St. Lucian Nobel-prize-winning poet. Atop Morne Fortune (Hill of Good Luck) - where the French and English battled over control of the island - visitors take in panoramic vistas. Froggie Jacks in Castries offers some of the islands finest food: local fish bathed in inspired fruit sauces, island vegetables dotingly prepared and a smoked-marlin appetizer so popular that patrons pack pounds of it in dry ice and ship it home. |

Pleasant Holidays Online Booking Engine Apple Vacations Online Quotes & Availability “Wonderful experience at Maria Islands” Maria Islands Nature ReserveTwo of us and a guide headed out for the bigger of the two Maria Islands. My husband is a keen naturalist. Our guide, Donald Anthony, was excellent. This tour was booked through the National Trust.
Donald picked us up in his jeep and we made the long journey down to the south. At Viex Fort we picked up a small fishing boat steered by a lovely guy appropriately called Moses. We wondered why he was putting on souwesters in such calm water. We soon found out as we approached Maria Island and met the Atlantic head on. Large waves and a bit of a roller coaster ride! I now see why, when booking the tour, it is insisted on that you have to be a strong swimmer!
Upon landing on the sand at Maria we jumped off into the water and then proceeded to hike up a fairly steep trail. In some places there were rope rails to hang on to but most of the time not. With large cacti either side it was all to easy to reach out and get a few spines in ones fingers!
The wildlife, flora and fauna was fascinating. We saw many of the rare blue-tailed lizards that are unique to this island. We did not see the small rare (non-poisonous) snake but saw plenty other insects, lizards, scorpions etc. My husband and Donald made it to the top. I didnt, quite. Donald was very helpful and has a huge knowledge of the island and its inhabitants. Afterwards he and I went snorkelling in the sea. The water was warm and crystal clear. Moses then came to pick us up and we ended our adventure.
Bear in mind that there are no toilets or facilities on the island, it is completely natural which is what makes it so special. Well worth a visit for those who are adventurous and who want to know more about the lizards and other wildlife there.
Closed in the breeding season but open from January to March and possibly other times too. We plan to go back there for another visit next year.
