Gros Islet St.Lucia Hotels & Resorts

Gros Islet is the newest town in Saint Lucia, having been recently promoted from a village to a town. It is the location of the Beausejour Cricket Grounds where both One Day International and Test Cricket is played. Part of the 2007 Cricket World Cup was played there. It is the administrative centre of the Gros Island Quarter, a region of Saint Lucia in the Windward Islands (Lesser Antilles)which includes the island's northernmost point, Cap Point.

It lies north of Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, and features the Friday Night Street Party which is its major tourist attraction. Also known as the jump-up, the Friday Night Street Party encompasses several blocks, which have to be informally cordoned off with the stalls of street vendors. Steamed fish, barbecue chicken and St. Lucia's own Piton beer can be purchased from these vendors. Music can be heard through the old fishing village, and locals and tourist both dance in a central cross section in the small streets to the sounds of calypso, zouk, reggae and R&B.

“Romantic Evening, memorable experience!”

Gros Islet Freespirit Boat Charters and Tours

While in St. Lucia over the holidays, my husband surprised me with a sunset dinner cruise from Rodney Bay to Marigot Bay on the Free Spirit 43 ft. motor yacht...It was one of those evenings that I will still dwell on the memory of years from now!

The Free Spirit only takes three couples per trip, which adds to the intimacy of the event.

The Free Spirit picked us up at the pier of The Edge Restaurant (Harmony Suites). They will pick up at any pier in RB, but as we were meeting friends for a drink at the Edge, this pier was selected on our request.

The boat, which is spectacular, pulled up along the pier, prompt and pristine. We boarded and curled up at the back, across from another couple that we know personally and headed out to sea. There were only two couples on our trip, which made it even better. Great views of RB and the Marina as the boat headed down the coast destined for Marigot Bay.

Christian, the captain and Beth (his wife / crew) were fantastic. Both were professional and friendly, answering questions when asked and being discreet when we were chatting amongst ourselves. Service was great. Champage, cocktails and beer were provided on the journey.

The sun sets as you travel down the coast and the timing is awesome. The tail of the sun was just going below the horizon as we approached Marigot Bay. And, as it does not take long for the sun to actually disappear below the horizon, it was pitch black when we pulled up to the pier at the Rain Forest Hideaway for supper. The pier was very dark, but that had already been accounted for - a gent was waiting with a bright beam flashlight to escort us off the pier and into the restaurant.

Our table was ready and the service was excellent. The trip includes a table d'hote menu (several delicious choices for each course) and a bottle of wine per couple. The restaurant is suspended over the water and the atmosphere was very intimate.

We had a very leisurely supper and then headed back to the yacht for the trip back up the coast. I feel it is important to point out at this point that the Crew did not come and get us or tell us it was time to go. They patiently waited at the boat until we were done and ready on our own. They operated on our schedule, not a pre-set one, which I think speaks volumes about the quality of the product they are selling!!!! Kudos Christian and Beth!

The trip back up the coast under the pitch black sky, watching the stars and looking at the island lights was an experience that really can't be described. I can still see it vividly in my mind though.

We were delivered back to the pier of our chosing and had a romantic walk back to the house we were staying at.

This was definitely a night to remember and is an outing I would strongly reccommend to anyone interested in a fabulous evening!

Gros Islet fishing village impressions

This is where we parted ways with most of the tourists of St Lucia, as we were staying in the small fishing village of Gros Islet, sandwiched in between the Marina, Rodney Bay, and the Sandals and the Landings condo development. Although staying in a small fishing village sounded quaint, the village itself was pretty rough. We were the only tourists - which didn’t bother us - but the complete lack of restaurants, the locals smoking pot on every corner, open sewers running through the streets - well let’s just say it took away considerably from the charm of the fishing village. There is what could be a nice stretch of beach in front of it, but the water didn’t look overly clean, and there was a lot of junk around the area. There are no tourist facilities - no ‘real’ restaurants - mainly street food and bars selling barbecue chicken. We did end up eating at Somewhere Special with some friends we met, and we all had good meals, although despite the name, it was nothing that special.

Bay Guesthouse, Incredible cheap oceanfront hotel in Gros Islet

We found the Bay Guesthouse in the Lonely Planet. The guesthouse is located a short walk from the main part of the village, but in some respects is a world away. The bright orange two story building faces the ocean, and once you step inside the gate to the property, it doesn’t take long for you to relax and realize this is great value for the money (we paid $30US a night). The property is very clean, and the rooms, while basic, are immaculate. There is no hot water, but in the afternoon the water (or air) seemed to get warm enough that it didn’t matter. There is free wifi, and our room had a kitchenette, with dishes, a counter with bar stools, and a stove.
