St. Lucia’s Marchand Boulevard Children’s Literacy Program

Every community seems to have a spot like St. Lucia’s Marchand Boulevard, a place of crippling poverty and soul-searing despair, where, in many cases, crime seems to offer the only way up and the future appears to be as empty as it is bleak. Too often, in these dead-end neighborhoods, it is the children, with little means of escape, who suffer the most.

Yet not every area is lucky enough to have a force for good like Virgil Leonty. Distressed by the horrendous conditions in the Marchand Boulevard area and its effects upon the local children, Leonty decided to do something about it and began her efforts to stop the vicious cycle wrought by lack of education. Thus, four years ago, Ms. Leonty started a Children's Literacy Program, whose sole objective is to expose the kids in the Marchand Boulevard region to books and get them excited about learning.

Ms. Leonty’s original efforts resulted in enabling children to have access to books and ensuring that they started the school day off right with a healthy meal provided to them by the breakfast program that she created.

Recently Ms. Leonty recognized the need for a Library and Learning centre, which, in her words, “would act as a ‘perfect distraction’ from the guns-and-drugs culture in which too many of the local kids are unwittingly immersed.” The proposed centre will be situated in a two-story building, in the Marchand Boulevard region itself, and will comfortably house all the facilities and host all the activities of the program, including the library, the computer centre, the weekly classes and the breakfast program.

The Sandals Foundation would like to help Virgil realize her dream and rescue the kids of Marchand Boulevard. But that can only happen through the generous support and donations from caring and concerned individuals just like you. This is the only way to make sure that the planned Library and Learning centre is completed and amply equipped, so that every single child in St. Lucia’s Marchand Boulevard has the capability to embrace an education and rise above the unfortunate circumstances that threaten to hold him or her back. Virgil Leonty’s generous donation of her time, her resources, her energy and her compassion have helped to create something priceless in St. Lucia’s Marchand Boulevard—hope. At the Sandals Foundation it is our mission to support community initiatives, such as Virgil Leonty’s Children's Literacy Program, because we believe that projects such as these can inspire others, transform lives and uplift an entire community.
