Soufriere shows signs of Amerindian occupation. Until recently however, there was little evidence to show that they had been there in any numbers. Now, the discovery of the terraces and carved rocks at Belfond and the exciting new find of the petroglyph near Jalousie indicate that Soufriere was perhaps one of the most important sites of all.
After the Amerindians, the first permanent settlers to arrive were the French who came around the end of the 17th Century. Already well-established in Martinique, the realized that the rich fertile soil of Soufriere would be ideal for farming. In 1746, Soufriere was, officially recognized by France, as St Lucia’s first town. Pleasant Holidays Online Booking Engine Apple Vacations Online Quotes & Availability “The "drive-in volcano"” Sulphur SpringsKind of tame compared to Yellowstone, but interesting. Our guide, Selena, was excellent. Prepare to smell like rotten eggs! Selena complained that she and her fellow guides have to hang out because no one else can stand the smell.
The most interesting aspect of this attraction was Gabriel's Hole, the only manmade outgassing. A guide named Gabriel was jumping on the surface to show how pourous it was, and fell in! Fortunately, he survived the experience.
A worthwhile attraction if combined with other sights near Soufriere.

Soufrière is a town on the Southwest coast of Saint Lucia in the Windward Islands (Lesser Antilles). Soufrière was the former capital of Saint Lucia during times of French rule. It is now a small sleepy fishing port with an emerging tourism industry. It boasts several attractions including a "drive-in" volcano, the Diamond Botanical Gardens with waterfall (briefly featured in the Superman II movie) and historic mineral baths, plus the nearby black sand beaches of Anse Chastanet to the north and Malgretout to the south. The town is reputed to be the birth place of Napoleon's Empress Josephine de Beauharnais. Although the exact locale of her birth is disputed by historians, it is certain that the Empress spent much of her childhood in the town on her father's plantation. Framing the town to the south are the picturesque Pitons - comprising the Gros Piton and Petit Piton. They rise directly up from the coral reef beds and form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region is popular for snorkeling and scuba diving. Soufrière doubled as the fictional town Port Agnes, capital of the equally fictional island of Cascara in the 1985 comedy movie Water. The movie Creature was also filmed there. Soufriere, which was established by the French in 1746, and is one of the oldest towns on St. Lucia. It features a very unusual marketplace that is decorated with bright murals and gingerbread trim. More of the islands past is alive and well in the small fishing villages of Anse-le-Ray and Canaries, where visitors can get a glimpse into one of the island’s most interesting traditions, fishing with dug-out canoes. |
